BASF, the worlds largest chemical maker, is applying for approval to cultivate a genetically-modified potato to resist late blight, the world’s most damaging potato disease caused by Phytophthora infestans, a fungi-like pathogen; the disease behind the mass starvation that ravaged Ireland in the 1840s and is said to still cause the loss of up to 20% of the global potato harvest per year.
